candle info & FAqs

Every handmade piece at Turning Leaf Handcraft is individually poured and finished, making each item truly one of a kind. Because we craft our vessels using natural concrete materials, subtle variations in color, surface texture, and minor air bubbles are a natural outcome of the artisan process rather than defects. These organic imperfections and unique traits celebrate the authentic character of raw materials, ensuring that no two pieces are ever identical and bringing a unique, tactile warmth directly into your space.

Design Your Candle

Candle Care

Burning Times
To get the most out of your candle, allow the wax pool to reach the edges of the vessel during every burn, especially the first. This initial burn sets the "wax memory," preventing tunneling and maximizing the lifespan of your candle. We recommend burning your concrete candle for at least 1 hour, but no more than 3 to 4 hours per session to ensure a clean, stable flame and preserve the integrity of the natural vessel.

Wick Trimming
Proper wick care is essential for a clean, smoke-free burn. Always trim your wooden wick to approximately 1/8 inch before each lighting, gently tapping off any charred wood from the previous burn. Maintaining a short, clean wick prevents excessive soot, keeps the flame controlled, and allows the natural scent profile to diffuse evenly throughout your room.

Safety Tips
Enjoy your candle safely by placing it on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, flammable materials, and sudden airflow. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it strictly out of reach of children and pets. Discontinue burning when about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom, protecting your concrete vessel so it can transition seamlessly into its next reused life as a refilled candle, planter, or home accent.

Candle Refills & Vessel Cleaning

Vessel Prep & Wax Removal For Refills

  • Preheat Oven: Set oven to a low temperature, ideally between 170°F and 200°F (80°C to 93°C).
  • Warm Vessel Slowly: Place the concrete vessel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and warm slowly up to 200°F to melt leftover wax residual.
  • Remove Residual Wax: Carefully pour out liquid wax into a disposable container or wipe clean with a thick paper towel while warm.
  • Extract Hardware: Remove the metal wick clip base from the bottom of the container.

Cleaning & Sanitizing For Reuse

  • Cool Completely: Allow the vessel to drop to room temperature before applying liquid cleaners.
  • Alcohol Wipe: Once completely empty, wipe down the interior thoroughly with isopropyl rubbing alcohol to dissolve oil residue and sanitize the surface.
  • Air Dry: Let the vessel air dry fully before inserting a fresh candle refill or repurposing.

Safety Tips

  • Handle Hot Concrete: Always use heat-resistant oven mitts when handling warm vessels; concrete retains heat for extended periods.
  • Never Pour Wax Down Drains: Dispose of melted wax in the trash; wax will harden and clog plumbing lines instantly.
  • Avoid Water Shock: Do not plunge warm concrete into cold water to prevent cracking.
  • Keep Away From Open Flames: Never use alcohol near open flames or heat sources.

Frequently Asked Quesions

How long will my candle burn?

Burn time depends on vessel size, but with proper care, our candles provide a long-lasting, even burn. Allowing the wax pool to reach the edges on your first burn and keeping the wick trimmed ensures you get the maximum hours out of every candle.

Will the vessel get hot?

Yes, concrete naturally retains heat, so the exterior will become warm to the touch during extended burns. Always place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface, and avoid moving or handling the vessel while the candle is lit or immediately after blowing it out.

How often do I trim my wood wick?

Trim your wood wick before every single burn. Gently snap off or trim the charred top layer to about 1/8 inch high. Removing the burnt tip keeps the flame steady, prevents soot, and ensures your candle lights easily every time.
